Department of Anaesthetics

About the department

The department is staffed by one specialist and five medical officers, with two interns rotating through every two months. We offer anaesthetics to ASA 1 -4 elective and emergency surgical cases in the following disciplines: General Surgery, Orthopaedics, Urology, Gynaecology, ENT and Eyes. There are two full day main theatres in daily and a minor ops lists twice daily (for day-case emergencies e.g. evacuation of uterus, abscess drainage). After hours, there is one emergency theatre open. Our department also manages all surgical ICU/HCU patients and there is good co-operation with the Physicians in managing and teaching in the High Care Unit. The on-call MO is available for anaesthetic consulst and to assist with resusciations, lines and airway management throughout the hospital.

We are able to facilitate one additional elective student into the department at any one time.

Teaching is focussed on the requirements at the time. There is ongoing teaching of interns, but tutorials to prepare for the Diploma in Anaesthetics as needed. Our hospital is accredited for training towards the DA.
