About the department

The department is staffed by one specialist general surgeon and two principle medical officers. This is a satellite teaching hospital for the University of Cape Town and therefore a number of doctors rotate through the department in order to gather more experience. They include two general surgery registrars, one family medicine registrar, two orthopaedic senior medical officers and six interns. Local and foreign pre graduate students visit the hospital. A number of private specialists offer there experience on a sessional basis.

The surgical department offers services in the following disciplines: General Surgery, Gastroenterology, Orthopaedics, Urology, Gynaecology, ENT and Ophthalmology. The above mentioned disciplines share the theatre complex that consists of two main theatres and a smaller theatre for minor procedures. Both conventional open surgery and minimal access surgery are practiced at this hospital. There is also a GIT unit for upper and lower endoscopic work. After hours, there is one emergency theatre open.
